Here’s what to know about the shooting.
Four people were killed in a shooting at a high school in northern Georgia on Wednesday, the state’s bureau of investigation said, adding that a suspect was alive and in custody.
At least nine other people were hospitalized with injuries, the authorities said, including one who was flown by helicopter to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, one of the major trauma centers in the region.
Here’s the latest:
-
Officials in Barrow County, Ga., said the shooting occurred about 9:30 a.m. at Apalachee High School, near Winder, which is roughly 50 miles from the center of Atlanta.
-
Sheriff Jud Smith of Barrow County said that one person was in custody, but did not share any information about the age of the individual or that person’s connection to the school, nor did he disclose whether the authorities were searching for other suspects.
-
During a brief news conference outside of the school, Sheriff Smith described a chaotic situation and said investigators were still trying to get a grasp of what happened. “Please, let us get the facts that we need to make sure we get this right,” he said, adding, “Every minute, it’s developing.”
-
Apalachee High School is a rural campus with roughly 1,800 students in ninth through 12th grades. Several other schools in the area were under lockdown.
-
The streets surrounding the school were clogged on Wednesday with law enforcement officers and emergency responders. Parents, some parking more than a mile away, walked toward the school, anxious to reconnect with their children. Hundreds of evacuated students were waiting on the school’s football field.

A 14-year-old student at Apalachee High School told Atlanta News First, a local news outlet, that he was sitting by the door in his classroom when “something told me to look to my left.” That’s when he saw the shooter “with a big gun” out of the corner of his eye. The student said he ran to the back of the classroom and hid. He estimated the shooter, who he identified as a man, shot about 10 times, making his ears ring.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed that four people had died, but dispelled rumors that the suspect had been “neutralized,” adding that reports of additional shootings at nearby schools were false.

In a statement mourning the victims of the shooting, President Biden called on Republicans to work with Democrats to pass new gun control legislation. “What should have been a joyous back-to-school season in Winder, Georgia, has now turned into another horrific reminder of how gun violence continues to tear our communities apart,” the president said.
