Contributors

Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing (TSMC), AstraZeneca, and Novo Nordisk were the top individual contributors. TSMC continued to draw strength from its strategic position in artificial intelligence chip manufacturing, which drove both demand growth and pricing power for leading-edge chips. AstraZeneca reported first-quarter revenue and earnings that surpassed market expectations, particularly in its oncology division. Novo Nordisk continued its strong performance as it executed well on its established diabetes franchise and benefited from weight-loss drug opportunities.

Detractors

LVMH, Diageo ( DEO ), and Bank Rakyat ( OTCPK:BKRKY ) were the top individual detractors. LVMH, the French luxury goods company, and Diageo, the global beverage company, performed weakly due to decelerating growth, which was driven by weaker demand from aspirational consumers in developed markets, such as Europe and the United States. Shares of Bank Rakyat, the Indonesian bank, lagged following its first-quarter investor day, as management revealed that credit costs were impacted by prior inconsistencies in its underwriting model.

Investment approach

Invests in the equity securities of international companies that pay attractive, sustainable and growing dividends with the aim of providing international equity returns with less volatility.

Further insight

During the quarter, the fund added to its industrials' exposure through the purchase of Saint-Gobain, while the consumer discretionary allocation was increased by the addition of Adidas. The position in the financials sector was reduced following the sale of Prudential. Similarly, Symrise was sold in the materials sector.

Important Risks: The fund is actively managed and its characteristics will vary. Holdings shown should not be deemed as a recommendation to buy or sell securities. Stock and bond values fluctuate in price so the value of your investment can go down depending on market conditions. Investing in small-cap companies may entail greater risk than large-cap companies, due to shorter operating histories, less seasoned management or lower trading volumes. Investing in mid-cap companies may entail greater risk than large-cap companies, due to shorter operating histories, less seasoned management or lower trading volumes. The fund may use derivatives to hedge its investments or to seek to enhance returns. Derivatives entail risks relating to liquidity, leverage and credit that may reduce returns and increase volatility. International investing involves special risks including, but not limited to political risks, currency fluctuations, illiquidity and volatility. These risks may be heightened for investments in emerging markets. Investments in emerging markets may be considered speculative and are more likely to experience hyperinflation and currency devaluations, which adversely affect returns. In addition, many emerging securities markets have lower trading volumes and less liquidity. Performance may be attributable to unusually high IPO profits. There is no guarantee this level of performance will be repeated. IPO securities have no trading history and the price may be volatile.

1 The MSCI All-Country World Index represents large- and mid-cap stocks across 22 of 23 developed markets(excluding the United States) and 24 emerging market countries.. The Morningstar Rating TM for funds, or "star rating", is calculated for managed products (including mutual funds, variable annuity and variable life subaccounts, exchange-traded funds, closed-end funds, and separate accounts) with at least a three-year history. Exchange-traded funds and open-ended mutual funds are considered a single population for comparative purposes. It is calculated based on a Morningstar Risk-Adjusted Return measure that accounts for variation in a managed product s monthly excess performance, placing more emphasis on downward variations and rewarding consistent performance. The top 10% of products in each product category receive 5 stars, the next 22.5% receive 4 stars, the next 35% receive 3 stars, the next 22.5% receive 2 stars, and the bottom 10% receive 1 star. The Overall Morningstar Rating for a managed product is derived from a weighted average of the performance figures associated with its three-, five-, and 10-year (if applicable) Morningstar Rating metrics. The weights are: 100% three-year rating for 36-59 months of total returns, 60% five-year rating/40% three-year rating for 60-119 months of total returns, and 50% 10-year rating/30% five-year rating/20% three-year rating for 120 or more months of total returns. While the 10-year overall star rating formula seems to give the most weight to the 10-year period, the most recent three-year period actually has the greatest impact because it is included in all three rating periods. The fund was rated against the following numbers of U.S.-domiciled Foreign Large Blend funds over the following time periods:679 in the last 3 years, 639 in the last 5 years and 421 in the last 10 years. With respect to these Foreign Large Blend funds, the fund received a Morningstar Rating of 5, 5 and 4 stars for the 3-, 5- and 10-year periods, respectively. Other classes may have different performance characteristics.
