There may be more than four decades between them but Princess Amalia of the Netherlands and the Duchess of York appear to have a similar taste in fashion.

Princess Amalia, 20, today appeared at the opening of the Dutch parliament in The Hague in a low-cut, bottle green, caped gown - the very same one that 64-year-old Sarah Ferguson wore to an event in Gothenburg , Sweden , just two weeks ago.

But given that the £1,700 dress is by London-based designer Safiyaa - a favourite of the Princess of Wales - it's perhaps unsurprising that the striking number should receive two royal seals of approval in as many weeks.

While the heir to the Dutch throne Princess Amalia chose Safiyaa's 'Sarita' dress for a formal, daytime event on Thursday, Sarah Ferguson wore it to a glitzy awards ceremony in Gothenburg on September 5.

Princess Amalia, the eldest daughter of King Willem-Alexander , 57, Queen Maxima , 53, added the blue sash with orange stripes reserved for members of the Royal House in the Netherlands.

She paired the bottle green gown with gold sandals by New York designer Stuart Weitzman.

The royal completed her look with a gold, mirrored bag by French brand-of-the-moment Jacquemus and a gold, jewel-encrusted headband.

Princess Amalia styled her outfit with gold jewellery, including bangles, a bracelet and a pair of oversized stud earrings.

The Duchess of York, meanwhile, opted for a matching green clutch bag and dramatic silver and diamond earrings when she wore the Safiyaa dress at the The Perfect World Foundation's awards ceremony, where she was seen with popstar pal Ellie Goulding .

High-end label Safiyaa has long been a favourite of the Princess of Wales, who chose its £1,295 purple 'Cecilia' dress with a fit-and-flare silhouette for her appearance at the Wimbledon men's singles final on Sunday, July 14.

The outing marked Kate's second public appearance after abdominal surgery and a course of preventative chemotherapy for cancer .

And, in November 2023, Kate wore the brand's £1,745 'Destiny' dress the Royal Variety Performance.

The design boasted a diamanté neckline, padded shoulders and dramatic, flared sleeves that fell to the floor.

Kate styled the dress with J.Crew crystal and pearl earrings, a Jenny Packham 'Casta' lamé clutch and Emmy London 'Rebecca' suede pumps - all of which she had previously worn.

But Kate is not Safiyaa's only royal admirer. Meghan Markle wore a sky blue dress from the label in 2018 while on a royal tour with Prince Harry - and a host of international royals were quick to follow suit.

During the couple's 16-day tour of Australia, Fiji, Tonga and New Zealand, Meghan debuted the £1,095 'Ginkgo' gown at a state dinner.

The sleek crepe, form-fitting  design was enhanced by floor-length cape sleeves, creating a glamorous aesthetic.

Founded in 2011 by German-born Daniela Karnut, Safiyaa takes its name, meaning 'purity', from the designer's daughter.

Ms Karnut writes on her brand's website: 'My goal is to make women feel strong, confident and desirable by providing elements of an elevated, versatile wardrobe.'

She launched her brand with the aim of redefining demi-couture, providing women with accessible bespoke style solutions.

Her collections feature striking silhouettes crafted from luxurious fabrics and adorned with rich colours, showcasing artisanal craftsmanship suitable for day-to-night wear.

Other royals who are fans of the brand include Crown Princess Victoria of Sweden, her sister-in-law Princess Sofia , Princess Theodora of Denmark and Princess Isabella, the daughter of Queen Mary of Denmark .

Notably, Princess Victoria asked the label to dress her for the wedding of Crown Prince Hussein and Rajwa Al Saifn in Jordan last year.

She looked the epitome of opulence in a bright fuchsia 'Gingko' gown, costing £1,193, paired with the Laurel Wreath Tiara.

Sustainability and craftsmanship are central to Safiyaa's ethos. The brand operates multiple ateliers in major cities, where each item is made-to-order by a team of artisans using traditional techniques.

Every garment is meticulously crafted from sustainably sourced fabrics, with one tailor dedicated to each piece, ensuring it is made in a safe and ethical workspace.
