Industrial production posted a bigger-than-expected increase in August, but most of the gain was tied to autos and there was little sign of a rebound in a depressed U.S. manufacturing sector.

Output climbed 0.8% last month. Economists polled by The Wall Street Journal had forecast a 0.2% increase in production.
