Lower auto sales hold down consumer spending

The numbers: Sales at U.S. retailers rose slightly in August, but not enough to suggest a big improvement in an economy still weighed down by high interest rates and the cumulative effects of several years of steep inflation.

Sales inched up 0.1% last month, the government said Tuesday.
