For the first time in Summer Olympics history, the ceremonies did not take place at a stadium. Instead, the 10,500 athletes floated down the Seine, with each of the 206 nations on their own boats over an east-to-west route that ended in front of the Trocadéro, where the ceremonial portions of the event took place.
